A New CCG Carvers Guide to Competition (Progress Report)

2001 has been a year of review and improvements for the CCG Judges Organization. We have looked at our procedures and have modified them extensively. We have also been working hard on creating a new CCG Carvers Guide to Competition that we will release in 2002. Watch for details on how to obtain one in an upcoming Log. One of the major tasks this year was to review the CCG judging categories and their definitions. There were extensive rewrites and identification that there needed to be some additional categories created to meet the needs of the carver. In addition a number of petitions for new categories were received from CCG members.

The CCG Judges Organization is proud to announce that there will be 16 experimental categories for 2002. Experimental categories are those that are approved for competition for a period of one year as a test of their popularity in competition. If sufficient interest is generated then they may be adopted as official categories. Occasionally a category may be continued as an experimental category for a second year. The new categories are:
DS Service Decoy, Waterfowl; SD Shore Bird Decoy; PC Carved Plants; CS Carved Spoons; IN Intarsia; XC Mixed Caricature; CM Mixed Category; PY Pyrography; RB Reptile Burned; RC Reptile Caricature; RN Reptile Natural; RP Reptile Painted; RS Reptile Stylized; SA Santa Category; SM Schooled or Mentored; and UT Utilitarian. The old Ornamental catagory has been replaced with a new category: MI Miscellaneous.

You will also see some changes in naming and the Category IDs have been changed to assist us in tracking carvings. Examples would be: Animal Categories are now called Mammal, and Realistic Categories are now called Natural. We hope that you will see the benefits of the CCG Judges' work as you enter shows in 2002. Looking forward to seeing you in competition.

Details of New Categories

DS Service Decoy, Waterfowl
This category is exclusively for the full-sized decoy commonly referred to as Smoothie. Anatomy and posing must be correct. There will be no significant undercuts nor attempts at feather texturing. Painted areas will be correctly located on the bird, but will not include any attempts at feathering; just swatches of correct color. The carving must have a Keel; Correct shapes and painting will be of prime consideration.
NOTES:
In reality, this is a painted category; the unpainted bird would be entered in Bird Natural or Bird Stylized.
Half sized bird should be entered into Bird Natural or Bird Stylized.
The carvings will not be floated.     [Top]

SD Shore Bird Decoy
This category is exclusively for the full-bodied and life size decoys carved from wood. Anatomy and posing must be correct. Carving details and painting should be done to present the essence of the species at the distance of twelve (12) feet. Shore birds must be mounted with a single stick on a base. The stick must be removable from the base. The base and dowel will not be considered in the judging. Non-wood materials such as glass eyes are allowed. Correct shapes and painting will be of prime consideration.
NOTES:
In reality, this is a painted category; the unpainted bird would be entered in Bird Natural or Bird Stylized.
Half sized bird should be entered into Bird Natural or Bird Stylized.
A bird mounted on a stick will be disqualified from this category if the stick cannot be removed from the base.
No machine blanks allowed.     [Top]

PC Carved Plants
Carved plants of all types should be entered in this category. All styles are allowed. All finishes are allowed. Non-wood materials such as artificial stems, stamens, etc. are allowed, but not encouraged. Other species may be present in the composition, but the plant must be the significant figure.     [Top]

CS Carved Spoons
This category includes all ornamental, non-functional carved spoons as exemplified by the love spoon. It is certainly possible that other decorative approaches to this category might be possible. (An example is a decorative spoon which does not fit the love spoon description; or a love fork.) All finishes are allowed. All styles are allowed. NOTE: If there is not significant decoration on the utensil, it must be entered in the Utilitarian category.     [Top]

IN Intarsia
This is the creating of a figure or picture by assembling pieces of wood, which have been precisely cut, fitted, and smoothed, and then glued to a backing-board of some sort. The pieces may or may not be fitted into a wooden framework. Credit will be given for appropriate wood color and grain orientation. The fit of the pieces, height of pieces (relative to each other), height of pieces as appropriate to the composition in creating depth and/or three dimensionality will be considered. The backing-board should be visible only if there is an artistic reason. Only clear finishes should be used.     [Top]

XC Mixed Caricature
This category is intended for caricature carvings that include two or more significant figures, which individually would qualify for different categories. A scene of two or more figures of the same species shall be entered in the same category as a single figure of that species. Merit will be given to a group carved from a single continuous piece of wood. All forms of finish are allowed. NOTE: This category applies primarily to the Animal, Bird, Fish, and Human combinations of categories, although other categories may be applicable. If the carving fits the definition of another category it should be entered in that category.     [Top]

CM Mixed Category
This category is intended for carvings that include two or more significant figures, which would individually qualify for different categories. Compositions of two or more of the same species shall be entered in the same category as a single figure of that species. If the carving fits the definition of another category it should be entered in that category. All types of finishes are allowed.     [Top]

PY Pyrography
This is the creating of a picture on wood by using what is normally accepted as a woodburner. Although the surface might be curved (as on the outside of a vase or pail), the work is in no way three-dimensional. This is two-dimensional art. As in burned carvings, though, the burning must be clearly visible. Emphasis will be placed on crispness of lines, shading, and use of texturing, illusion of depth and perspective, and overall composition. A formal frame will not be considered unless it is a carved part of the composition. All finished are allowed so long as the burning remains clearly visible.     [Top]

RB Reptile Burned
One or more reptiles, amphibians, or dinosaur figures (or parts thereof) carved so that the carving can be viewed in three dimensions form any point of view except that of the mounting surface. More than 50% of the surface is burned to provide realism. All details of anatomy and physical features must be rendered as accurately and realistically true to nature as possible. Non-wood materials such as glass eyes, metal where needed for strength, etc. are allowed but not encouraged. Consideration will be given to the quality of the burning. All types of finishes are allowed provided the quality of the burning is clearly visible.     [Top]

RC Reptile Caricature
One or more reptiles, amphibians, or dinosaur figures (or parts thereof) carved so that the carving can be seen in three dimensions from any point of view except that of the mounting surface. Exaggeration, by means of ludicrous distortion, of parts or characteristics for the purpose of satire, ridicule, or humor must be evident. All forms of finish are allowed.     [Top]

RN Reptile Natural
One or more reptiles, amphibians, or dinosaur figures (or parts thereof) carved so that the carving can be viewed in three dimensions form any point of view except that of the mounting surface. All details of anatomy and physical features must be rendered as accurately and realistically true to nature as possible. Non-wood materials, such as glass eyes, bone or ivory horns, etc. are allowed, but not encouraged. All forms of finish are included provided the natural wood grain remains visible.     [Top]

RP Reptile Painted
One or more reptiles, amphibians, or dinosaur figures (or parts thereof) carved so that the carving can be viewed in three dimensions form any point of view except that of the mounting surface. More than 50% of the surface must be painted. All details of anatomy and physical features must be rendered as accurately and realistically true to mature as possible. Non-wood materials such as glass eyes, metal, bone or simulated ivory horns, etc. are allowed but not encouraged. Primary consideration shall be given to the quality of the painting.     [Top]

RS Reptile Stylized
One or more reptiles, amphibians, or dinosaur figures (or parts thereof) carved so that the carving can be viewed in three dimensions form any point of view except that of the mounting surface. The subject of the carving will always remain identifiable, but the basic form is definitely modified for a reason. Anatomical detail will not necessarily be accurate. Fine physical features probably should not be present. All types of finishes are allowed.     [Top]

SA Santa Category
All styles of male and female Santa figure(s) are acceptable in this category. All finished are allowed. Where the approach is obviously realistic, proper proportion will be considered. Where the figure is painted, the quality of the paint job will be a strong consideration. This category is intended for the human Santa figures. Santa, his sleigh, and reindeer need to be entered in Mixed Category.     [Top]

SM Schooled or Mentored
This is for the carver who had a significant amount of help with the entry. Advice from a friend or fellow chapter member does not count. The instructor did part of the carving, or very closely monitored the student's progress such that the work cannot truly be said to be entirely the student's. All types of finishes are allowed. All styles are allowed. NOTE: An entry in this category is not eligible for Best of Show. Judging guidelines will be the same as for the regular category for the type of carving entered.     [Top]

UT Utilitarian
This category includes all carvings which have a primary use other than ornamental or decorative. (Examples: bookends, lamps, switch plates, and trivets) This category does not include any carving which would fit into either Woodcrafting or Woodcrafting with Decoration category. All finishes are allowed. All styles are allowed.     [Top]

There is also a category called Miscellaneous. This was the old Ornamental category where all carvings that didn't fit other categories were placed. The definition for this category is as follows:

MI Miscellaneous
Miscellaneous includes any carving that does not fall within the definition of another category.

NOTE: Carvings that qualify for a specific category may only be entered in that category. In the case that a carver tries to enter two carvings which both fit in the same category, only one carving may be entered into any given category; the other will be disqualified.     [Top]
